Label Review:

Two alter egos of Russian musician, poet, netlabel administrator, and artist Evgenij V. Kharitonov join forces on Light Hour Of Darkness. Material recorded between 2006 and 2009 is blended into a single hour-long drone piece. Starting with catchy, vaguely tribal rhythms, backed by slowly-building wet static and percussive vocal samples, the track gets noisier along the way. The mix is very eclectic: at times taking the shape of straight harsh noise, nuoh-esque quiet mechanical groaning and hissing, or dark atmospherics, and that is just in the first half hour! Light Hour Of Darkness is a hefty testament to where Mr. Kharitonov has been and a good indication of where he will go in the future.

After the huge review that where the Yeah I Know It Sucks Video awards i thought it would be a good idea to start a light weight review of a recent released release on a freshly born new label.
Perhaps i am a little bit biased over here but hey i just wanted to promote this new baby of SP and The Top Of The Flops net label. SPTOtfSP it is called and is a label that releases music for free and also have the great option to buy each release on a floppy diskette. That means that all the releases are very compact which is certainly a great thing to safe space on your hard disk, mp3 player or any other modern equipment to store audio on. It is ran by a mysterious animal with the name Koala and in its short existence already released some very *cough* *cough* interesting releases you should *cough* out for yourself! The release i wanted to focus on today is one by the famous Russian mufti instrumentalist , poet and all round creative artist from Russia: Microbit Project.
On the diskette we find 2 cover pictures, one consist of some kind of tree with a nice intoxicated happy color. And the other one contains the same color but an epic face pulling Mister Microbit himself! The title is ‘Acid Colors’ and this EP consist of one track with the same name.
Lets hear it together shall we?
This start with some nice lobit aciiid sound that wobbles and grabs my full attention. We hear some 4 by 4 techno beat that is as steady as it is funky. It almost got a bit of a rock vibe to it. We hear the most original lest acid sounds in a creative way played along with some kind of rhythmic modem sound from back in the day when there was no high speed internet equipment. Telephone lines where necessary to connect to the internet and probably they are still being used and that is an expensive business. Lobit music is perfect for the people depending on telephone lines to download their newest music for free in a rapid speed. Lobit music will almost trick the dial up internet user into having a quicker than lightning internet connection.. Anyway i’m wondering off again.. But yes there is not a lot to say as this is pure entertainment. A great track that is fun, and funky and not the acid you probably heard many times. This is dance music with a underground flop vibe from utterly high quality. And i am not just saying that because Koala (the animal that runs the label) or Evgenij Kharitonov (the man behind Microbit Project) is a good global music friend.. but it seriously is unique and very enjoyable! it is really what the title says, not the boom boom whoop whoop dance floor act but more danceable acid with colors!

I would just like to take a moment before starting this review to say that it makes me happy to see the game Myst popping up in the keywords of some of the SPNet releases I’ve reviewed. So nostalgic!
Moving on, Microbit Project is a… project, if I may be redundant. And as you may have also easily realized, it’s a lobit project. Formed by Russian artist Evgenij V. Kharitonov, it’s purpose has been to explore sound possibilities within the range of 8 to 64 Kbps. Yeah, I know, I could have been a private investigator in another life. What all of this doesn’t tell you, however, is that this album is pro. Lo-bit, but hi-art.
The first track, ‘Bhatga’, is a perfect example of dark ambient music. It begins with a low hum, reverberating at times so greatly that the sound of it can at times feel like a chasm. Static creeps in like a television with poor reception, but it’s use is perfectly subtle and makes for an interesting contrast with the space created by the hum. You feel like you’re standing in the hall of an abandoned hospital and reality is breaking down. Ghosts pass through you frequently. Twice, a lone bell rings.
Track two, ‘Dark Logo’, is more dark ambient drone. The static has stayed, possibly a brilliant and purposeful by-product of the rendering of sound at low bitrates. Higher frequencies enter the picture at one point, but eventually the tones descend and some crisp pops echo out. Toward the end, a menacing buzz makes it’s presence known. Another very effective piece of audio phantasmagoria.
‘Deep Sex’ (and really, is there any other kind to be had?), is a smooth bassline and with accompanying bass click. Then, to your surprise, a creepy soundscape floats in. The audiophile in me was impressed with this track.
The next piece is ‘Droning Sky’. True to name, it is a drone track. A down-pitch siren, either in mourning or in warning, enters the headspace created by the drone toward the end. If it were reinterpreted as psycho-acoustic, in a game or film, the result would be intensely surreal and frightening.
‘Light Isteria’ is a high-pitched drone with sizzling interference that eventually breaks down midway and re-emerges. Whatever this hertz range is, the effect is distressing. I loved it!
The sixth track is ‘FRRYXL 1004040′, a low, rumbling and distorted drone with a click that adds pace. The drone shifts, subtly but still perceptibly, and you wait for something to happen. That something is a noisy roar that fades in and sounds as though a gated evil is escaping from some unseen dimension. It exits with a scrape of noise and all that is left is the drone.
Following that one up is a track called ‘Sonic Mantra’. It’s a dark choir in Dagon’s temple. A sizzle of static returns, and reality shuts down. What is real? What is imaginal? Who am I? I don’t know how to answer any of these questions anymore, because there’s just too much sensory overload. A cacophony of aquatic-sewer electronics bring about the end.
‘Felicita’ is the finale, a cavernous drone of unseen, unknown proportions, folding space behind itself. At 12:23, it’s the longest track on the album, as well as being the most involved and metamorphic. The tone of the work shifts from dark to darker. At 5:34, a new, oblique drone forms and something akin to the sorrow of existential misery or horrifying like objective nihilism takes shape and surrounds us. At 8:46, a low horn emerges and remakes the world in it’s image. When all else disappears, the horn is the last thing you hear.
All things considered, this might be one of the best dark ambient / drone albums I’ve heard in recent years, comparable to or even surpassing anything someone well known in the genre like Lustmørd has ever done (all the better, as it’s free!). It’s the kind of album that makes you want to pick up a cheap cd player and take it out for a spin late at night while sitting alone in a graveyard. Or an airfield.

Прямо сейчас вечер и всю ночь в прямом эфире 3 RADIO – первый в истории авангардной музыки международный фестиваль музыкантов, создающих композиции в формате лоубит (от low bitrate. Распространенные сокращения – lobit, lo-bit, lowbit). Это чистый, незамутненный музыкальный андеграунд, который в принципе не имеет шансов (и не пытается) получить коммерческое продолжение, поскольку, как явствует из названия, эта музыка принципиально создается в лоу-фай качестве с битрейтом не выше 80 kbps, а чаще гораздо ниже – от 1kbps до 64 kbps. Лоубит, появившись на мировой андегрануд-сцене в середине 2000-х, давно превратился в отдельную музыкальную философию. В России и СНГ главным (и, до недавнего времени, единственным) проводником лоубит музыки был сетевой лэйбл MICROBIT-RECORDS (оператор – ваш покорный слуга). Главный же информационный источник лоубит-сцены – блог в Живом журнале – LOBIT_RU.
Итак, фестиваль. Его организатор – известный голландский (но проживающий ныне в Таиланде) музыкант, художник и акционист, яростный ненавистник коммерциализации искусства Кай Нобуко (Kai Nobuko), известный так же под своим сценическим именем Toxic Chicken. Помимо всего прочего, Кай организатор первого лоубитного подкаст-шоу TIBOL RADIO SHOW и оператор сетевого лэйбла Tops Of The Flops Records.

Festival description:
Martin L King had a dream but Tibol had one dream too; the realisation of a true Lobit music festival featuring a variety of great known and lesser known international lobit artists from all over the globe. to come together, have fun, and perform their art/music/poetry/sounds how they want it to a small but interested crowd.
Today we finally got the money and the time together to organize this joyful event.
Location:
The festival will be held in the village Lobith in The Netherlands, close near the german border with lots of water surrounding it. The performances will be held in some secret locations in and around Lobith. We will keep you up to date where to catch your favorite act or lobit artists.

The LOBIT Music Festival will be available as a live stream on Tibol Lobit Radio.
and also as a down-loadable release on archive.org with the help of Sirona Records.
So if you are not able to make your way to the wonderful village of Lobith

Microbit Project delivers a classy and delicate slick old school dance theme, completely with intense nice sound production, funky baselines and progressive rhythms. The underground timeless acid dance-floor microbit it taking us too could come out of the past as-well as the future. But it certainly comes out of the hands from a well respected genius of music, sound andpoetry!
The music is perfect head phone and speaker friendly and above all next to good company it relaxed funky rhythmic grooves are definitively food for your dance shoes! The 'smooth operator' of the underground has tamed the drum sequencer synthesizer machine Arturia Spark for our enjoyment, and i bet he left it provokingly hot!
enjoyment for lovers of old school retro dance music with a futuristic funk twist and the general underground public. the little rhythmic sounds in the mix are even hitting some African twists and the simple but effective melodies are certainly a joy to dance and to listen to.
